Race Report: IM World Championships (Kona, HI)

Wow, where to start? I could go back to the first time I watched IM World Championships on NBC.  I think I was 15 or 16, I hated running - I would never do that. I could go back to when I first started triathlon in 2012, when I thought crossing the finish lines of sprint and olympic distance races was "enough" and thought I would never be able to do an Ironman. I could go back to October of 2015, when I watched every second of the IM World Championship being streamed on my computer.  Having completed IM Lake Placid that summer, I knew I would never be fast enough to qualify, but I still dreamed - maybe someday, when I am 70! I could go back to May, when Women For Tri  asked for applicants to represent them at Ironman World Championships.  The recipient of the spot would have to raise $25,000 for grants and scholarships that are used to promote female participation in the sport.  I thought I had an inspiring story, and I 100% support the effort to help other women f

IM70.3 Puerto Rico Race Report

" Why did you choose this race?"  Before we could talk about race and nutrition plans, Coach Sami asked me that question.  I 100% chose it for the destination and the vacation Mark and I would have after the race in San Juan.  What a great perspective to tuck away for race day! Mark and I got to San Juan on Thursday afternoon and checked into our VRBO on Condado beach.  I chose this location because of the view... and its proximity to swim start.  It was a bit of a hike to get to the athlete's village and transition, but still doable which made everything easier than trying to deal with the traffic in San Juan!   Friday and Saturday, I got checked-in.  Rode my bike a couple of times on the super SAFE green paths found near transition.  I swam with several other athletes and ran in the middle of the day to TRY to acclimate a little to the heat and humidity.  I met tons of Team Zoot and Ironman Foundation Teammates.  I stuck to my nutrition plan with pasta on Friday and Wa

Sponsor-a-Mile: Puerto Rico 70.3

This year I have decided to dedicate each mile of my 70.3 races to my supporters!!  In past races, I thought of and leaned on the inspiration of my supporters when the going gets tough during a race.  I have smiled thinking about quotes they have shared or advice they have given.  Will you consider sponsoring a mile to help inspire me during 70.3 Puerto Rico on March 20, 2022? Here is how: 1.  Head to  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gQu2e5PceLXiay2F4dTZfcMq_saORTUq0_0dbQOx6r4/edit?usp=sharing to choose the mile(s) that you would like to sponsor.  Add your name and any note (a quote, mantra, memory) that you want me to have for that mile.  I will be printing and bringing this list with me on race day.  (laminated of course!)  2.  Head to  https://ironmanfoundation.donordrive.com/participant/Erin-Byrge to donate the corresponding amount.  (If you sponsor Run Mile 10 - it is $10) 3. Watch for updates on March 20 and after to see how your inspiration got me to the finish line! T
